TruthMedia News :
Karachi Electric (KE), the primary power utility company
responsible for providing electricity to the city, found itself faced with the
daunting task of managing this crisis. In order to balance the available supply
and demand, KE resorted to a drastic measure – the deliberate deactivation of
street lights across the city’s major roads and streets. While this move was
not taken lightly, it was deemed necessary to ensure that the available
electricity was channeled to essential areas in which Nazimabad , Liaquatabad, Site Area , Saeedabad etc and such as hospitals, schools, and
residential areas.
Beyond the immediate power shortage, Karachi grapples with a
host of other pressing issues. The condition of roads in many areas is
deteriorating, exacerbating the transportation challenges faced by citizens.
The inadequate sewerage system compounds the urban plight, leading to
unhygienic conditions and posing health risks to residents. Moreover, the city
has seen a rise in instances of theft and vandalism, with drug-addicted
individuals targeting street iron fences and other accessories, including stop
lights. Vehicle owners are also impacted, as the cost of maintaining their
vehicles' batteries becomes prohibitive due to the prevailing inflation.
In recent months following the change in government
leadership, Karachi, the sprawling metropolis of Pakistan, has been grappling
with a significant and prolonged power crisis, leading to frequent power
outages and a surge in utility bills for its citizens. The previous government
of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) saw a series of events unfold,
ultimately resulting in a cascade of challenges, including intense load
shedding, mounting taxes, inflation, and a weakening national currency.
As the government struggled to curb inflation and prevent
the escalation of the already-high inflation rates, the devaluation of the
local currency against the dollar compounded the crisis. The nation's foreign
exchange reserves dwindled steadily, leaving authorities with inadequate funds
to purchase fuel required to sustain the power plants. This scarcity of fuel
prompted the shutdown of numerous power plants, triggering an alarming shortage
in electricity supply across the city. The ensuing power shortfall had a domino
effect on the distribution of electricity, leading to widespread disruptions.
As a result of these challenges, Karachi's streets are
predominantly illuminated by the headlights of vehicles during the night,
casting long shadows over the urban landscape. The situation is a poignant
illustration of the broader economic and social challenges the city and its
citizens are grappling with. Regrettably, the government at both federal and
provincial levels has seemingly turned a blind eye to the struggles faced by Karachi,
a city that holds the distinction of being the world's fifth-largest.
Pedestrian Specially Womens and childrens are Facing very difficulties in absence of street light .The manholes are also open .
The implications of this crisis on society are far-reaching.
Basic human rights of citizens, including access to safe and well-lit streets,
are compromised. The overall security and safety of the populace are at stake,
as well as the ability of businesses to function optimally, especially after
sunset. The state and the newly appointed caretaker government must recognize
the urgency of the situation and take immediate action to address the power
crisis, road conditions, sewerage issues, and security concerns.
In conclusion, Karachi's prolonged street light power cuts
are a symptom of the economic challenges that the city has been grappling with.
The situation not only underscores the deep-seated economic problems but also
highlights the interconnectedness of infrastructure, economy, and society. A
multi-faceted approach is needed, involving both short-term measures to
mitigate the immediate crisis and long-term strategies to address the root
causes of the challenges faced by this vibrant city and its residents.
